World Cup nights mean 2am trading in Sydney from Thursday 15 October: the late shifts to chase and what the hours after midnight pay

Liquor & Gaming NSW has cleared City of Sydney venues to keep serving until 2am on five Rugby League World Cup nights from Thursday 15 October, and City of Parramatta venues on three of them. Here are the nights, the suburbs and what a casual earns after midnight under the Hospitality Award, including the two Sunday nights when midnight cuts your rate.

On five nights between Thursday 15 October and Sunday 8 November, venues in the City of Sydney can keep serving until 2am after Rugby League World Cup matches, and on three of those nights so can venues in the City of Parramatta. Every venue that takes up the extra two hours needs bar and floor cover past its usual close, often added at short notice, and those shifts go to the casuals who asked before the roster went up.

Liquor & Gaming NSW lists each one as midnight to 2am on the following day, so '12am to 2am, Friday 16 October' means Thursday night, straight after Australia play New Zealand at Allianz Stadium. That date shift is where the pay gets interesting, because under the Hospitality Award the hours after midnight belong to the new day. On the two Sunday nights, your rate goes down when the clock ticks over.

Short version: for a casual Level 2 under the Hospitality Award (MA000009), an hour after midnight pays $40.62 when it falls on a Saturday and $38.27 on a weekday morning, against $47.39 for a Sunday hour before midnight. These are minimum rates from the first full pay period starting on or after 1 July 2026. General information, not legal or financial advice.

The five nights, and where the 2am licence applies

Night (trading to 2am the next morning)MatchesWhere venues can trade late
Thursday 15 OctoberAustralia v New Zealand (men), Allianz Stadium, 8:05pmCity of Sydney only
Friday 16 OctoberSamoa v France (men) 5:45pm, then Australia v Samoa (women) 8:05pm, CommBank StadiumCity of Sydney or City of Parramatta
Friday 23 OctoberSamoa v Wales (women), then Tonga v Lebanon (men) 8:05pm, CommBank StadiumCity of Sydney or City of Parramatta
Sunday 1 NovemberTriple-header: Australia v Wales (women), Lebanon v France, then Tonga v Samoa (men) 8:05pm, CommBank StadiumCity of Sydney or City of Parramatta
Sunday 8 NovemberWomen's and men's semi-final 2, Allianz Stadium, men's kick-off 8:05pmCity of Sydney only

On all five nights the last game kicks off at 8:05pm, so full time lands around 10pm and the crowd hits the bars with hours still to go. The final on Sunday 15 November is in Brisbane, and NSW venues showing it can trade until midnight.

  • Who can open late: pubs, bars, clubs, licensed restaurants, producers such as breweries with a drink-on-premises authorisation, and the casino, plus listed live music venues on 8 November.
  • Drinks on the premises only. Takeaway sales and gaming machines aren't covered, so the extra hours are on the bar and the floor.
  • Venues already licensed past 2am trade as usual, so the new shifts sit with places that normally close earlier.
  • Check your venue's council. Newtown is split between the City of Sydney and the Inner West, and Paddington between the City of Sydney and Woollahra. Enmore Road is out. On the Parramatta nights the whole City of Parramatta counts, from the CBD and Harris Park to Sydney Olympic Park.

What an hour after midnight pays under the Hospitality Award

Most pub, hotel and bar jobs come under the Hospitality Industry (General) Award, MA000009. A casual's ordinary rate is 125% of the base rate (the 25% casual loading), and clause 29.2 adds a flat $2.95 an hour from 7pm to midnight and $4.42 an hour from midnight to 7am, Monday to Friday only. Saturday pays 150% and Sunday 175%, with nothing on top: under clause 29.3 you get the single highest penalty that applies, never two stacked together.

The day changes at midnight, and so does the rate. After midnight on a Friday night you're working Saturday hours, and after midnight on a Sunday night, Monday hours. Here's how that lands for a casual Level 2, the grade for pouring and mixing drinks:

NightHour before midnightEach hour after midnightMidnight to 2am pays
Thu 15 Oct$36.80$38.27 (Friday morning, plus $4.42)$76.54
Fri 16 Oct$36.80$40.62 (Saturday rate)$81.24
Fri 23 Oct$36.80$40.62 (Saturday rate)$81.24
Sun 1 Nov$47.39 (Sunday rate)$38.27 (Monday morning, plus $4.42)$76.54
Sun 8 Nov$47.39 (Sunday rate)$38.27 (Monday morning, plus $4.42)$76.54
On the two Sunday nights, midnight is a pay cut. A casual Level 2 goes from $47.39 an hour to $38.27 the moment Sunday becomes Monday.

So chase them differently. On the Fridays, the two hours after midnight are the best-paid of the night and worth staying back for. On the Sundays the money is before midnight, so put your hand up for the whole close from kick-off, not just the 2am tail. All five late windows add up to $392.10 for 10 hours at Level 2.

Your level changes the number, not the pattern

Casual classificationAfter midnight, weekday morningAfter midnight, SaturdaySunday, before midnight
Level 1: food and beverage attendant grade 1 (glassies)$37.47$39.66$46.27
Level 2: grade 2 (pouring and mixing drinks, waiting)$38.27$40.62$47.39
Level 3: grade 3 (sophisticated drinks, running a cellar, supervising)$39.38$41.96$48.95
Level 5: food and beverage supervisor$43.55$46.95$54.78

Registered clubs (MA000058) and standalone restaurants (MA000119) run on different awards, and some larger employers use an enterprise agreement. Our guide to the hospitality awards sorts out which one covers your venue.

Before you say yes to a 2am finish

  1. The two-hour minimum. If you're called in only for the late window, clause 11.3 still means at least 2 consecutive hours' pay, so being sent home at 1am doesn't halve it.
  2. The licence ends at 2am. Your shift doesn't. Pack-down and the till count are hours worked, and they're still after midnight. The award adds the $4.42 'per hour or part of an hour', so on its wording 20 minutes past 2am on a weekday morning carries the full $4.42.
  3. The ride home. If you finish when it's unreasonable to get home on your usual transport and the venue doesn't provide a free ride or somewhere to stay, clause 26.8 makes it pay the reasonable cost of getting home, casuals included. Here's what a late trip home is worth.
  4. The morning after. The 10-hour break in clause 15.5 covers full-time and part-time staff only, so the award won't stop a casual being rostered at 9am after a 2am close. Check tomorrow's roster before you agree to tonight's, and read more on finishing after midnight.

How to get on the late roster

  • Tell your venue now. The first two nights are back to back, and late cover goes to whoever already said yes.
  • Open your availability for all five nights, Sundays included. Availability decides how many shifts you're offered, and 'not after midnight' quietly rules you out of every one.
  • Ask near the grounds, mid-week. Pubs and bars walkable from Allianz Stadium in Moore Park and CommBank Stadium in Parramatta get the crowd first. Walk in on a quiet afternoon with your RSA, not on match night.
  • Parramatta's week is bigger. The Parramatta Lanes festival has its own 10pm to 2am extension for venues in Parramatta from Wednesday 21 to Saturday 24 October, wrapped around the 23 October double-header.

Getting offered the shifts in the first place

Most casuals only ever see one venue's roster, so the best-paid late shifts go to whoever the manager texts first. Shiftly is free workforce management for venues, built so the roster fills itself, and its on-demand staffing network is coming soon, starting in Sydney.

Workers on the network will be offered shifts at venues nearby and see what each one pays before accepting, with Shiftly's 8% worker service fee shown in the breakdown, then get paid fast. Those shifts work differently from the casual job priced above: the venue engages you for the shift as an independent contractor, at rates at or above award minimums, plus super. Frequently asked questions

What does a casual bartender earn after midnight in Sydney?

Under the Hospitality Award, a casual Level 2 earns $38.27 an hour from midnight to 7am Monday to Friday ($33.85 plus the $4.42 night loading), $40.62 after midnight on a Saturday and $47.39 on a Sunday. The day the hour falls on decides it, not the day your shift started. These are minimums from the first full pay period starting on or after 1 July 2026, and a venue can pay more.

Which Sydney venues can trade until 2am on World Cup nights?

Licensed venues in the City of Sydney on all five nights (15, 16 and 23 October, 1 and 8 November), and in the City of Parramatta on 16 October, 23 October and 1 November, including pubs, bars, clubs, on-premises restaurants and the casino. The extension covers drinks served on the premises only, and each venue's own licence conditions still apply.

If I'm only called in for midnight to 2am, what's the minimum I get paid?

Two hours' pay, under clause 11.3. For a casual Level 2 that's at least $76.54 on a Thursday or Sunday night (two hours at $38.27) and $81.24 on a Friday night (two hours at $40.62), even if the venue shuts early.
